heavy sigh
Today was by far the busiest day I’ve had. Some guys came in to work. They were very friendly and 2 were sporting a certain little powerbook like my own, not quite as fast or as well cared for, but special in a whole different way.

to the #1 assassin
Thanks to my #1 Negard for getting me hooked on ClarkConnect Software. This software is the easiest to configure and the home edition is free, a price nobody can argue with. What is ClarkConnect you say? It’s a Linux (snort!) distribution that is fairly easy to install, it’s primary purpose is to set up a gateway/server for home or office use. It’s fairly robust and is just chocked full of great features. It has a stateful firewall, squid transparent web caching (very useful to conserve bandwidth) and it allows easy setup for Web, FTP, SSH, PHP, MySQL, Mail and all other sorts of goodies. It also allows easy setup for Windows File and Printer sharing, the unfortate but widely used method for sharing files across networked computers. I’m probably going to be implimenting a ClarkConnect solution to tackle a couple of our needs on the road. Thanks Jason.

As in Battlefield 2. Man I can’t wait. If you haven’t already seen the “explosive video” trailer from fileplanet, then get it here. It’s amazing, dibs on gunner position in the topless hummer.

an oldy but a goody
This is a piece I wrote a couple pages into my brother’s journal when he lived with me at college in Minneapolis. It’s funny because it’s exactly opposite my sentiment. I like machines….(they’re watching)
I woke up this morning and to my amazement the world was completely different. The people were the same but the ever-present hum of the machines was gone. The roads, filled with people, no cars just people. The offices filled with not computers, but paper and people to use it. Everywhere there was a machine yesterday was filled with not void, but people doing the work of the machines. I went to the corner store; there was not a newspaper, but a man telling the news. What a wonderful world.
Now back to our regular programming.
rex manning day!
Tomorrow is Rex Manning Day! (Yes that’s a code, Empire Records fans will get it) I’m pretty excited, it means rules change and the show will soon go on. Got some schooling on lighting today, I am just amazed by what some of these things can do. It’s an arc type bulb like the search lights you sometimes see when a big gorilla climbs the state capitol or something. It has little glass plates called “flags” with alternating clear and colored lines that taper to a point. They then slide in and out like garage doors, this allows more color or less color and since there is a diffuser lense, it makes it pretty even. There are three colors Cyan(blue), Magenta(red) and Yellow, this allows them to create a full spectrum of color. It’s freakin’ sweet. The other cool thing is a thing called the “gobo” a template either cut from metal or printed onto glass that rotates or moves in the light. The light is then focused using lenses and it will project the moving image quite clearly and with two oppositely spinning gobos it can create quite a mesmerizing effect. In fact, I almost lost my leg in a scooter accident because I was entranced by the lights. I am sort of drawn to shiny things though…
Currently listening to : My heartbeat, it’s late and the hotel is quiet. I can also here a barking spider occasionally, over by the garbage can I think, maybe under my chair though.
oh the little differences
I’m finding it kind of funny all the little differences up here in Canada. For instance, Mazda is pronounced “Mazzz-duh”, which is funny because we used to joke about it when we were in college. Also the word process is pronounced “Pro-sess” which is funny when people are saying, I got the new Pentium 4 “Pro-sess-or”, it’s fast “ya know, right?”. Another thing I’ve noticed are the traffic lights are a little different. There are some that flash green which means it will just stay green until somebody pushes the walk button to cross. This makes it even funnier, and took me a while to figure out that’s why when cars come to cross streets the driver or passenger jump out to push the walk light button… more to come.

dealz dealz dealz!
I got a new ‘Puter-com today, in the weirdest of places. Anyhow, here’s the deal. I wanted a Mini-ITX machine, they are very cool, but fairly expensive for the cost-power relation. When I was on my quest for the white whale LCD monitor wait, lets start again. It all starts with a woman named Marla Singer… Ok so that’s a different thing all together. Anyhow myself and a runner were tasked with getting a 19-21″ LCD Monitor with Composite video input. Now typically I would not think this is a big deal, but Welcome to Canada! Here we have two choices, buy the one we have or don’t buy the one we have. What a selection, it’s like Georgia, without all the shooting… OK so we were on a quest to get a monitor and I found this beauty on clearance, new in box at an office depot. It’s pretty hot, I paid $499Canadian, which is like $30USD ok so it’s really $415, but it’s still a good deal. Here’s the specs… 2.8GHz Celeron (400MHz Bus) 512 MB DDR400, 40GB Drive, 52×32x52×16x Combo Drive, Digital Optical I/O, USB2.0, Firewire (on the front and back), IR and Remote. It’s a pretty sweet machine, for the price and size. Now, you ask, what the hell did he buy that for. And to you all I say two words. Per Diem. With 3 catered meals and 14 hour workdays you don’t need a lot of it, but you get it anyway.
Actually I do have plan for it, I’m going to make a mobile file server for my road peepz, so they can work more like the hard-core office people they are.

audio check
So the stage is assembled, and they’re checking audio. It’s pretty damn good sound, and it’s fun to hear. I’d really like to bang out some of my tunes on the system, as I’ve never heard Wu-Tang or Sasha on 50,000 Watt system. Except for that one time when I was staying with Michael Jackson, but I don’t like to talk about that. We’re getting closer to the date that we roll out and hit the road, and I can’t wait. I’ve been keeping pretty busy with random tasks, and that’s probably good.

wikipedia
For those of you who don’t know about this great and vast resource, Wiki-Pedia is an online collaborative encyclopedia. You can edit it. If you know something is wrong or have some information to add, you can do it. The community watches over it, and when defaced, most articles are reverted within 20 minutes. Currently it is one of the largest encyclopedias on the planet. I recommend the Random Page Link as a homepage, then you always get something new, and interesting, or maybe not.
The address is wikipedia.org(english) and I’ve just completed adding information about my wonderful hometown of Edgerton, WI. I added the lines about Tobacco City and Sterling North. You get that stuff drilled into your head living there.

octothorp(e) - n. [octo-thorpe]
def. (rare) A name for the # symbol
Stumbled across this while reading an article about scripting. Apparently it’s because it is thought to represent 8(octo) fields surrounding a village in the country (thorpe).
