leaps and bounds…..in bunny slippers
As I work for a tech company and with a lot of “heat-seekers” or “neo-philiacs” I’m usually in the know or witness to a lot of things. For instance, Dell Computer today issued a recall for somewhere around 4 Million laptop batteries, that’s right FOUR MILLION. This is the largest recall in computer history, and represents 18% of their 22 million notebooks sold since April 2004. (source: http://news.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=1196182006) That is insane, 22 million people bought Dell’s? At least they didn’t name the computer something like “Firetop” or “Fireball” or “Firebird”. Those types of names usually end up going wrong.
On another front, has anybody noticed the latest new operating system in development? I bet you have and didn’t even realize it. In fact, right now, you’re using it. And it does go by the name Windows or Linux or MacOS, but it works with them all. What?!? It’s the internet. Really, come on, the internet isn’t an operating system. It doesn’t provide a standard interface to sources of input/output. OK, maybe it does. But it doesn’t provide seemless integration of multimedia content with vast stores of data available in mere seconds. Wait, it does that too. OK, OK but it doesn’t run Word Processors, Spreadsheets, Games, Project Management, Personal Information Management or allow me to manage my financial records….oh crap. IT DOES. And holy crap, look at all Google’s Stuff! That’s right, we’re all running the same Top Layer operating system, more and more each day. How long is it before somebody develops portable machines that uses the internet for all the expensive or unreliable parts of computers today? Sony’s trying already with the MYLO. Many of us already store information online via Gmail, .Mac or Geek Squad Online Backup? (OK, the last one was a shameless plug for a great new product, but it still fits) You know how parents sometimes say that there kids grew up so fast they didn’t even notice, guess what. So did the internet. I can only imagine what’s coming, damn am I excited. Thin OLED screens that “static cling” to any surface and provide a monitor. The ability to control games directly using our brains. Robots. Intergalactic Space Travel. Everything you do, with the power of Internet Inside, and it’s happening so quietly. I cannot wait, luckily I’ve got Google Time Traveler (beta), so I don’t have to….
